Britain's most famous astronomer is a man of few words. Here's a few of them on smoking.
JL: Where did you start smoking?
PM: I started at the age of 16, to keep awake at night when I was driving an ambulance through the Blitz.
JL: What do you smoke now?
PM: Three Nuns pipe tobacco.
JL: Have you ever smoked anything else but a pipe?
PM: I have only tried two cigarettes in my life. And one cigar, I think.
JL: What do you say when someone asks you to put your pipe out?
PM: I never smoke anywhere where someone would object.
JL: Who would you most like to share a smoke with?
PM: Edmond Halley, the English astronomer and mathematician. As he died in 1742, I think it is most unlikely.
JL: Is smoking cool?
PM: Yes.
JL: Why?
PM: Why not.
JL: Do you smoke after sex?
PM: I've never looked.
JL: Ever set fire to a bed?
PM: No.
JL: What is your favourite smoking moment?
PM: When I am sitting at my typewriter working.
JL: Have you ever lit up your pipe to celebrate a cosmic event?
PM: I don't think so, really.
JL: Whose doorway would you like most to smoke in?
PM: My own.
JL: Have you ever thought of giving up smoking?
PM: No.
